Whimsical Mushroom Bag

I don't crochet bags or purses very often, so I forgot how pretty the crochet makes them turn out. This mushroom bag in particular turned out so cute! It's not super big like a tote would be, but it still is quite roomy for a purse. Fair warning, if you are someone who doesn't like weaving in ends after a crochet project is done, this may not be the project for you! Feel free to use different colors than I did, really make it pretty!

Materials:

  • Medium weight acrylic yarn (or any medium weight yarn of your choice)

    • Light gray

    • Coral (sort of an orangey-pink)

    • Dark brown

    • Light pink

    • White

  • 5mm crochet hook

  • Scissors

  • Crochet needle

Pattern Instructions:

For the center circles of the squares (you need 13 of these- 5 in coral color, 4 in dark brown color, and 4 in light pink color):

Round 1: Make a slipknot. Chain 4. Slip stitch together to form a ring. Ch. 3. DC 11.

Round 2: Slip stitch. Ch. 3. DC. Increase every stitch. (24)

Round 3: Slip stitch. Ch. 3. DC. Increase every 2nd stitch. (36)

Chain 1, cut, and knot to finish.

Repeat for other circles.

For the circle border (to make them squares):

Connect border yarn to one of the circles on the outside round (I like to knot it). Chain 3. SC 7.

In the next stitch you will DC 2, chain 2, and DC 2. All in the same stitch.

SC 8.

DC 2, chain 2, and DC 2 in the same stitch.

SC 8.

DC 2, chain 2, and DC 2 in the same stitch.

SC 8.

DC 2, chain 2, and DC 2 in the same stitch.

Slip stitch to connect. Chain 1, cut, and knot to finish.

Repeat for all other squares.

For the mushroom applique (4 of each color, 12 total):

For the cap:

Row 1: Make a slip knot. Chain 9.

Row 2: SC 8. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 3: Decrease first two stitches and SC. Decrease last two stitches as well. Ch. 1 and turn.

*Note: When you decrease, you work a portion of the second stitch, then finish them together so the two stitches become one.

Row 4: Decrease first two stitches and SC. Decrease last two stitches. 4 stitches total.

Row 5: Ch. 1 and turn. Decrease first two stitches. Decrease last two stitches. 2 stitches total.

Single crochet (SC) border – Put (roughly) 1 SC in each stitch. Increase on corners.

Slip stitch and knot to finish cap.

For the dots on the cap:

Use the crochet needle to thread the yarn through, knotting in place.

For the stem:

Make a slip knot. Chain 6.

(skip the last chain stitch that you did) SC 2. HDC 1. DC 2.

SC 2 along the bottom. Ch. 1, cut and knot to finish.

Sew the stem onto the cap (from behind). Make sure you can’t see the stitches from the front!

Using the crochet needle and some yarn, sew each mushroom onto a different colored square.

Once all the mushrooms are attached to the squares, sew the squares together to form the body of the purse/bag. Remember, you're sewing them together in a diamond pattern, not squares. Look to the picture for reference if needed.

For the straps:

SC 1 row of gray along the top of the purse.

Chain 40 where you want the first handle to start.

SC 5 rows, connecting to the bag at the end of each row.

Repeat on other side for second handle.
