Granny squares, no matter what the design, are always my favorite to crochet. They work up quick, look nice, can have any color variation, and can go into a wide variety of projects. These sunflower granny squares would be absolutely beautiful as a blanket, bucket hat, or even a jacket!

Materials:

  • 5 mm crochet hook

  • Acrylic yarn (med. weight) in 3-4 colors (dark brown, tan, yellow, gray, white, etc.) depending on how you want the finished square to look

  • Scissors

  • Crochet needle (optional)

Instructions:

Round 1:

Make a magic circle.

Half double crochet (HDC) 12 stitches in the round.

Slip stitch, chain 1, cut, pull through, knot to finish.

This is the center piece of your sunflower granny square.

Round 2:

Tie petal color on. Pull loop through with hook. Chain 1. HDC into same stitch. Chain 1.

Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull hook outside loop. Yarn over, insert hook into same stitch, yarn over, pull hook outside loop. You should now have five loops on your crochet hook. Yarn over, pull through all five loops. Chain 1 to complete the puff stitch.

Follow the previous paragraph instructions for all remaining petals in the round. You should end with 12 petals.

Slip stitch to finish the round.

Round 3:

**If you are planning on making your outer petals a different color, now is the time to switch yarn colors.

Chain 2. Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through two loops. There should still be two loops left on your crochet hook.

Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull through two loops. There should be three loops on your hook.

Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull through two loops. There should be four loops on your hook. Yarn over, then pull through all four loops. Chain 2.

For the next petal follow this same pattern, but don't pull all the loops through until you reach 5 loops instead of 4.

Continue until all outer petals are done. You should have 12 petals total.

Chain 1 instead of 2 at the end of the last petal, slip stitch, chain 1, cut and knot to finish.

Round 4:

Tie on border color. Pull loop through and chain 3.

Treble crochet (TC). Chain 2.

TC 2. Chain 1.

3 double crochets (DC) in next stitch. Chain 1.

3 DC in next stitch. Chain 1.
