A couple of years ago, I saw that a lot of the crochet community was trying something called hexagon cardigans. I saw some really cute ones, and finally decided to give it a try! This is the first wearable piece of crochet I've ever made for myself (excluding hats or scarves), and to say I was proud to finish this is an understatement! I love that I was able to incorporate granny squares and make something truly unique that I will be able to wear time and time again. I'm looking forward to making more hexagon cardigans (and maybe even sweaters!) in the future with all sorts of colors!
Materials:
5 mm crochet hook
3 skeins acrylic yarn in main color (I used light sage)
Black yarn
Colors of yarn you want for the inside of the granny squares
Scissors
Crochet needle
Instructions:
For the granny hexagons:
Chain 4. Attach ends with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1: Chain 3 (this counts as first double crochet (DC)). DC into the circle in clusters of three, with three chain stitches between each cluster. Do this until you have six clusters total. Fasten with slip stitch.
Rounds 2-14: Chain 3 (first DC). Continue to DC in clusters of three, with one chain stitch in between each cluster. Corners (there are 6) will have two DC clusters with two chain stitches in between.
Cut, chain 1, and knot to finish the hexagon. Repeat all steps for the second hexagon.
*This is about a size large, so if you want a different size, adjust accordingly.
Attaching the hexagons:
When you fold the hexagon together, it should form an L shape. Sew the top shoulder line together on each hexagon piece, using the crochet needle and yarn.
Attach the back with three granny squares in between.
*I didn't make these granny squares, I actually got them at a yard sale a while ago, but they're basic granny squares. I think I even have a tutorial for making them under the fingerless gloves post I made last year.
Add rows of granny stitching in between the hexagon pieces (below the granny squares) to fill up the extra space. This should take about 4 rows. Cut and tie off.
Adding on the bottom:
Attach yarn (light sage) to the beginning of the bottom row.
Chain 3, DC 3. Chain 1. Continue to granny crochet the row along the bottom as normal.
When you turn to start the second row, chain 4, then continue as normal.
Do the same for row 4. (You should have about 33 granny clusters in the row)
Continue to granny stitch rows until you have 22 rows total. Cut and tie off to finish.
Sew eight granny squares along the bottom using the crochet needle.
Adding on the sleeves:
Attach the yarn (light sage) to the end of one of the sleeves. Granny stitch (the same way you've been doing) around the sleeve.
Slip stitch to join the round. Chain 3. Granny crochet another round.
Continue in this pattern until you've crocheted 14 rounds total. Cut and tie off to finish.
Repeat on the second sleeve.
Finishing touches:
Single crochet (SC) two rows of black at the bottom of each sleeve.
SC two rows of black along the sides of the cardigan.
