For this project, I used one skein (364 yds) of 100% acrylic yarn. The brand is Red Heart, and the color I used was lemon. These leg warmers would also be really cute in other colors, like gray, white, or purple. The yarn thickness was medium (4), so I used my 5.0 mm hook. This project only uses two different stitches, so it's simple to put together.
Main piece:
Begin with a slip stitch. To learn how to do a slip stitch, refer to the step-by-step pictures below.
Begin the chain stitch. To do a chain stitch, bring the **working yarn over your hook, then pull through the current loop. This completes a single chain stitch. Chain 40 total.
**Working yarn: The yarn being pulled from the current skein.
Something to note about this pattern is the importance of measuring the project to your leg as you go. This is crucial to making sure the
finished piece will fit you in the way you want. After you've finished your chain, flip your project horizontally and begin
to SC (single crochet). To complete a
SC, insert hook into next chain. Bring working yarn over the hook, then pull through one loop. Yarn over again, then pull this through the final two loops on the hook.
This completes one SC. Continue to SC down the foundation chain. Once you reach the end of the row, flip your project horizontally and insert your hook into the left loop on top. Begin SC again. Continue to SC back and forth on the project until 48 rows are complete. Again, be sure to measure the project to your leg as you go.
To finish off the piece, bring working yarn over hook, cut end near skein, then pull yarn through all the way.
Ankle border:
Make a slip knot, chain 6. Begin to SC rows, getting to 36 rows total. Finish last row and set piece aside.
Calf border:
Make a slip knot, chain 6. Begin to SC rows until 40 rows are done. Finish last row and set piece aside.
To finish:
Use a crochet needle (or hook) to sew the main piece together. To measure the yarn you will need, refer to the pictures below.
Tie a knot to begin the sewing process.
Weave the yarn over and under the sides, sewing together the main piece. To finish the tube, tie another knot at the end.
Once the large piece has been sewn into a tube, use the same method to stitch the ankle piece to one end, and the calf piece to the opposite end. It will look kind of like a sweater sleeve at this point, but trust the process.
When all pieces are attached, weave in extra ends with your crochet hook so they're not as visible. The first leg warmer is now complete! Follow these same instructions to finish the second leg warmer. I hope you enjoyed making this project as much as I did!
