Fabric Bookmarks

I've made bookmarks before on this blog, but I haven't sewn any until now. These fabric bookmarks would be a great project for someone who is new to sewing, as it is fairly basic. I love these fabric bookmarks, they are so fast to sew up and work great holding my place in a book! They are also a great way to use up scraps of fabric you may have lying around from bigger projects.

Materials:

  • Fabric scraps (at least 8.5 x 4 inches)

  • Ribbon

  • Sewing supplies (thread, scissors, etc.)

Instructions:

Cut out two 8.5 x 4 inch pieces of fabric. Place the pieces together, with wrong sides facing out and pattern sides facing inward. You can use a couple of sewing pins to hold the fabric in place if you wish. Seam allowance for sewing this part is 3/8 inch. Begin sewing down the first long side of the fabric and continue until you have a "U" shape. Don't forget to backstitch at the beginning and end so your stitching stays in place! There should still be an open 4 inch side left when you are done.

Using the opening left in the fabric, turn the bookmark inside out. The patterned side of the fabric should now be facing out. Use a pencil, pen, or tip of scissors to sharpen the inner corners of the bookmark. Iron the edges down to make the outside sewing easier. Turn the open top of the bookmark inside on itself to hide the raw edge. Iron down in place.

Cut a 4 inch piece of ribbon. Fold the piece of ribbon in half and place raw edges into the open end of the bookmark.

Sew around the outside of the bookmark, staying about 1/4 inch from the edge. Start with the open end and work your way around. Backstitch first and last few stitches to hold in place.
