Ever since I crocheted my chicken potholder earlier this year, I've been wanting to make chicken stuffies. I still have a lot of Bernat blanket yarn to use up, and stuffed animals are a great way to at least make a dent! These chickens turned out so freaking cute! I'm obsessed. I may or may not be making twenty more in the future. This is a quick project that can easily be finished in a few hours (if you're not easily distracted like me).

On a sidenote, does anyone play Stardew Valley? These remind me so much of the Stardew Valley chickens! I need to make some blue ones...

Materials:

  • Bernat blanket yarn (white, gray, yellow, red)

  • Plastic eyes (if you aren't planning on stitching them in)

  • Poly-fil stuffing (or something similar)

  • 5 mm crochet hook

  • Crochet needle

  • Scissors

Instructions:

For the smaller chicken:

Slipknot. Chain 4. Slip stitch together.

Round 1: 8 single crochet (SC) into ring.

Round 2: SC, increase every stitch (16).

Round 3: SC, increase every 2nd stitch (24).

Round 4: SC, increase every 3rd stitch (32).

Round 5: SC, increase every 4th stitch (40).

Round 6: 40 SC (back loop only).

Rounds 7-11: 40 SC.

Round 12: Decrease every 3rd stitch.

Round 13: Decrease every 6th stitch.

Cut and tie off.

For the larger chicken:

Slipknot. Chain 4. Slip stitch together.

Round 1: 8 single crochet (SC) into ring.

Round 2: SC, increase every stitch (16).

Round 3: SC, increase every 2nd stitch (24).

Round 4: SC, increase every 3rd stitch (32).

Round 5: SC, increase every 4th stitch (40).

Round 6: SC, increase every 5th stitch (48).

Round 7: 48 SC (back loop only).

Rounds 8-12: 48 SC.

Round 13: Decrease every 3rd stitch.

Round 14: Decrease every 6th stitch.

Cut and tie off.

Stuff the chicken with poly-fil. If you are using plastic eyes, put them in now.

Sew the top of the chicken closed.

Make the comb with red yarn:

Chain 2, 3 double crochet (DC), 1 SC, slip stitch.

Embroider the beak on with yellow yarn and crochet needle. If you are not using plastic eyes, embroider the eyes on with black yarn.

For the tailfeathers on the larger chicken:

Chain 10. Do this 3 times, so you have three segments of chain stitches. Loop each segment in half and carefully stitch to the back of the chicken. See pictures for reference.
