Chicken Potholder/Trivet

Materials:

100% cotton yarn (I used Peaches & Cream)

5 mm crochet hook


Instructions:


Body:

Slipknot. Chain (Ch) 4.

Connect to first chain stitch and slip stitch to form a ring.

Round 1:

Ch 3.

Double crochet (DC) 14.

Insert hook into top loop of first stitch and slip stitch to close the round.

Round 2:

Ch 3.

DC in same stitch.

DC 2 in each stitch after, until you reach

the end of the round. Slip stitch to close round.

Round 3:

Ch 3.

DC 2 in next stitch.

DC 1 in next stitch.

Continue the pattern of DC (2, 1, 2, 1) until you've done about 36 stitches. You should end on an increase. There should be a gap between where you started the round and where you are now.


Row 1:

Flip your work.

Ch 3.

DC 1 into the top of the next stitch (from round 3).

DC 2 into next stitch.

Continue the pattern of DC (1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2) until you reach the end of the row. You should end on an increase and have about 48 stitches.


Row 2:

Flip your work.

Ch 3.

DC 1 into the top of the next stitch.

DC 1 into next stitch.

DC 2 into next stitch.

Continue the pattern of DC (1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 1, 2) until you reach the end of the row.


Row 3:

Ch 1.

Single crochet (SC) down top of chicken. (SC 1 in each stitch, no set amount of total stitches)

SC 1 more stitch, half double crochet (HDC), and DC all in the same stitch.

Go to next stitch, triple crochet (TC) 8 times in the same stitch.

Go to next stitch, SC, HDC, and DC in same stitch.

Go to next stitch, SC 1.

Continue to SC in each upcoming stitch until you have done 5 SC total.

Skip 2 stitches, DC 7 in one stitch.

Skip 2 stitches, SC 1.

Skip 2 stitches, DC 7 in one stitch.

Skip 2 stitches, SC 1.

Continue this pattern until you reach the end.

End with a slip stitch, cut yarn tail, and knot to finish.

The body of the chicken is done!


Red comb:

Pull red yarn through the back of the chicken's head space, right before you started the triple crochets.

Ch 1. SC, HDC, and DC all in the same stitch.

Skip 1 stitch, then SC, HDC, and DC all in the same stitch.

Repeat this pattern until you have 5 bobbles total.

Ch 1, cut tail, and knot to finish.


Red wattles:

Pull red yarn through where the head meets the neck of the chicken, almost exactly where you started your single crochets on the chest.

Ch 1.

SC 1 in next stitch.

HDC 1 in next stitch.

DC 1 in next stitch.

SC 1 in next stitch.

Ch 1, cut tail, and knot to finish.


Yellow beak:

Pull yellow (or orange) yarn through (a little lower than where the red comb is).

Ch 3.

SC into middle chain.

SC into first chain.

Slip stitch back to head.

Ch 1, cut tail, and knot to finish.


Black eye:

Cut a piece of black yarn (about a foot long). Pull the yarn through the head, and wrap around where you want to eye to be. Continue to wrap the yarn around until you like the way your eye looks.

Cut yarn tail, knot ends at the back.


Weave yarn ends in on the back of the chicken to finish everything up and secure it. Enjoy your finished chicken!
