Bowl cozies make great gifts, and are very quick to sew up! I've used mine for bowls of hot soup so I don't burn my hands, and also for bowls of ice cream so I don't freeze! This project is also a good way to use up smaller pieces of material and batting.
Instructions:
Begin by cutting two 10-inch squares of fabric, and two 9 and 1/2 inch squares of batting.
Place 1 square of batting on top of 1 square of fabric. The wrong side of the fabric should be directly against the batting. Center batting on fabric and use a ruler to mark an X from corner to corner. Add pins to hold layers in place. Sew.
Now fold the square in half, batting side out, with raw ends on the left side. Align folded side for darts and mark - 1 inch across at the top, and 2 inches down. Sew. Trim to 1/8 inch seam allowance.
Fold the other way, to the undarted side, with raw ends of fabric on the left side again. Measure and mark 1 inch over, 2 inches down for the final two darts. Sew. Trim.
Repeat these steps with your other piece of fabric and batting.
Place two pieces snug together with batting facing out. Pin in place. Sew around the edge of the bowl cozy, but leave a 3-inch opening on one side. Be sure to backstitch around it (at the beginning and end) so the opening is more secure when pulling the layers through.
Turn bowl cozy right side out, through the opening. Sew around the edge of bowl cozy a final time, finishing off the opening and closing everything up.
Enjoy your finished bowl cozy!
Project notes:
If materials are not 100% cotton, DO NOT microwave the bowl cozy.
