Crochet Hooks
This is the most basic tool you'll be using to crochet with yarn, however the varying sizes of the hooks can be a bit intimidating to a beginner. I suggest getting a set of different-sized hooks instead of just one--it will give you more flexibility with the projects you choose.
The size of each crochet hook can be found at the center, on the grip. Hooks can be bought in many materials, including wood, plastic, steel, aluminum, glass, and more. I prefer aluminum hooks, and as you crochet more you'll find out what works best for you.
Yarn
The size of the hook you will use for a project depends on the thickness of the yarn. Most yarn labels should have a yarn size listed, a suggested crochet hook size, and the weight/length of the skein of yarn.
The label should also provide washing instructions as well as what material(s) the yarn is made up of. The yarn from the label pictured is listed 100% acrylic. I buy a lot of acrylic since it's cheaper than other yarns, but yarn can be made from almost any type of fiber or material.
